Insight for Jira Cloud - beta

Insight for Jira Server and DataCenter is a feature packed application and for a long time we were unsure if we could even take it to Atlassian Cloud due to technical limitations of the cloud framework provided by Atlassian. Since early 2018, we’ve been working to see how we could bring as much Insight functionality to Jira Cloud as possible. Atlassian made technical changes along the way and on 30:th October, the Jira Service Desk asset management integration framework was publicly announced. This integration framework makes it possible for us, and others, to integrate an external asset database with the Jira Service Desk portal. It’s important to know that this integration framework results in a different experience compared to Insight for Server and DataCenter.

Insight Custom Fields vs. Jira Cloud Asset Field

One limitation in Jira Cloud is that we cannot use the powerful Insight Custom Fields. We're bound to use what's called the "Asset Field" provided by Atlassian for JSD Cloud (also to be available for JSW and JC). For those of you who are familiar with the Insight Custom Fields, you know that using the flexibility in IQL, Filter Scope and type of interaction is extremely powerful and results in a great user experience. The Asset Field do not offer the same level of flexibility. We can conclude that the new Asset Field allows us to define an IQL to decide the assets selectable in the Asset Field, but that's pretty much it.

Some initial differences

We have received a lot of questions about features in Insight for Jira Cloud. To set the expectations right, we've decided to share a feature comparison overview. This comparison is only valid for the beta version of Insight for Jira CloudAs we release future versions, more and more functionality will be added to the Insight Cloud product.

(1) The Insight Custom Fields will not be available in Jira Cloud for the foreseeable future. The Asset Field feature is what's available for us to work with. All other features that is marked as "not available" in Insight Cloud will with high probability be implemented as we release new versions of Insight for Jira Cloud.

Insight for Jira Cloud - post beta

As you can see from the list above there are some valuable functionality missing in the first version of Insight for Jira Cloud such as overall importing, workflow functions, automation, reports etc. You can rest assure that we are working hard to implement this functionality as soon as possible.

Imports first - then automation

No surprise, we need to focus on the import functionality first. Even though it's possible to import assets via the Insight REST API, the option to schedule imports from databases, csv, json etc. is very valuable. Another high-value feature is the automation framework which we will also focus on. Other features will also find its way to Insight for Jira Cloud as we progress in the development of this product.

When will the beta version be available?

This is of course the most popular question. We would love to give you an exact date, but all we can say right now is that we're targeting Q1 2019. So stay tuned by signing up for the EAP program.
